    Monitor calibration test

    Runs locally

Go through the patterns in full screen and adjust brightness, contrast, gamma and sharpness in the monitor menu until each pattern looks right.

    Black level

Raise the brightness until you can just see squares 2–3 and the black around them stays black. If square 1 is clearly visible, brightness is too high.

    How to use

    1. Let the monitor warm up for 15 minutes and set the room lighting as you normally use it.
    2. Turn off dynamic contrast, eco modes and image "enhancements" in the monitor menu.
    3. Open each pattern in full screen (click to go to the next one) and follow the hint above it.
    4. Adjust brightness with the black pattern, contrast with the white pattern, then check gamma and gradients.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is this a real calibration?

It is a visual adjustment. A colorimeter is needed for exact color and gamma measurements, but these patterns fix the most common problems: crushed blacks, clipped whites and wrong sharpness.

Why do I not see the darkest squares?

Brightness (black level) is too low, the panel cannot show them, or the graphics driver uses a limited 16–235 range. Raise the brightness until steps 2–3 are just visible.

I see stripes in the gradients.

Some banding is normal on 6-bit and many 8-bit panels. Strong banding often comes from color profiles, "vivid" picture modes or low contrast settings.
