Frequently asked questions
Why check a hash?
A checksum proves that a file is exactly the one the publisher released. It detects broken downloads and files that were changed, for example by a malicious mirror.
Which algorithm should I use?
Use the one the publisher shows — today usually SHA-256. MD5 and SHA-1 still detect broken downloads but are no longer safe against deliberate tampering.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read in pieces in your browser, so even very large files work and nothing leaves your device.
